Glee Episode 8 – Mash-Up

“Mash-Up” is the eighth episode of the television series Glee. The episode premiered on the Fox network on October 21, 2009. It was written by series co-creator Ian Brennan and directed by Elodie Keene. The episode sees glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) attempt to create a mash-up wedding song for his colleagues Emma (Jayma Mays) and Ken (Patrcik Gallagher). Ken becomes increasingly jealous of Emma’s feelings for Will, and tries to force the football-playing New Directions members to quit the glee club. Students Finn (Cory Monteith) and Quinn (Dianna Agron) find that they are no longer considered popular. Rachel (Lea Michele) and Puck (Mark Salling) briefly date, but break up as they both have feelings for other people. Cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) also has a short romance with local news anchor Rod Remington (Bill A. Jones).
The episode features covers of five songs. Studio recordings of three of the songs were released as singles, available for digital download. The same three songs feature on the album Glee: The Music, Volume 1, while a fourth is included as a bonus track on copies of the album purchased from Target. Neil Diamond was hesitant about licensing his song “Sweet Caroline” to the show, but was convinced by series music producer P.J. Bloom, and went on to license the show a second song for later use.
The episode was watched by 7.24 million US viewers. The Wall Street Journal’s Raymund Flandez described “Mash-Up” as a “turning point” for Glee, praising the episode for its character development. Flandez, Andrea Reiher of Zap2it and IGN’s Eric Goldman praised Mays’ first vocal performance, covering “I Could Have Danced All Night” from My Fair Lady, however other musical performances drew criticism, with Michael Slezak of Entertainment Weekly deeming Morrison’s cover of “Bust a Move” a “pale imitation” of the original, and Joal Ryan of E! Online opining that Cory Monteith was so Auto-Tuned he sounded like Cher.
